Electronic & Photonic Innovation Centre (EPIC) Paignton was the epicentre for the national Photonics Bootcamp Hi-Tech Microelectronic Packaging Workshop.
Who hosted the event?
The event was hosted by Bay Photonics, and delegates from all around the UK attended. The workshop was split into two activities:
- An in-class “meet the specialists” and provided an open forum for all delegates to discuss aspects of microelectronics and participate in bespoke tutorials and around-the-table team exercises whilst engaging with the specialists.
- An in-cleanroom practical session, where the delegates gowned-up and put into practice what they had learnt in the morning session whilst again expertly supported by the specialists.
Who developed the workshop?
The Bay photonics hosted workshop was the conclusion of a UK-wide initiative, where delegates had previous spent time at other hi-tech facilities including the renowned University of Southampton’s Cornerstone Photonics Centre. For Bay Photonics and EPIC to have been selected as partners for this initiative highlighted the value in terms of expertise and know-how that Bay Photonics and other members of the Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster (THTC) bring to the UK semiconductor industry.
The workshop didn’t end on time!
The workshop terminated one hour later than scheduled, because all involved were enjoying the opportunity to share experiences, collaborate and make new business contacts, concluding with a final discussion of the day’s activities and Q&A session. In addition all delegates left with their certificates, and what they had made during the day as a memento to remind them of what happens every day at EPIC Paignton, the hub for creativity and innovation.
Feedback is key.
As with all these types of commercial events, the delegates were invited to post-event fill out a feedback questionnaire. The whole Bay Photonics team were very pleased to read that delegates rated the workshop very highly at 90% satisfaction, with recommendations to extend the course over two days to add even more value to delegate experiences. This is something the Bay team will for sure consider.
Dr Philip Mitchell had a few words to share
"It's encouraging that the whole Torbay Hi-Tech Cluster community is raising its profile and is acknowledged by larger UK clusters as adding value to the UK semiconductor industry and punches above the weight. Discussions are already started to repeat the workshop next year."
Want to learn more about PIC Bootcamp?
You can find out about all the courses via the PIC Bootcamp website by clicking here. All the courses are tailored to your experience and learning goals that you would like to set yourself and achieve. Why not begin with an introduction to Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), then move on to hands-on modules that bring core PIC functionalities to life. You then can continue with an introduction to design and layout for fabrication. Finally followed by a course on packaging which is what this news article is all about! By completing the full programme, you’ll leave with your own packaged PIC – something you can take away with you as an achievement of your learning journey.
